All About My Family

Book: A Handful of Buttons

*Use discretion as a teacher when introducing diverse family dynamics. This book is inclusive and may be found offensive to some parents. ALWAYS make sure to use integrity in your teaching. If a family has not approved of teaching specific terms and/or details, you can still share that families may all look differently but love is what they have in common.*

Me and My Family Tree

Song: My Family’s Just Right for Me – Barney

[Chorus]
Oh, a family is people and a family is love.
That’s a family.
They come in all different sizes and different kinds,
But mine’s just right for me.
Yeah, mine’s just right for me.

I’ve got a friend who lives with his mom and dad,
With his brother and sister, too.
They’ve got a cat, a dog and a pet bullfrog
And I’m really glad they do.

Oh, a family is people and a family is love.
That’s a family.
They come in all different sizes and different kinds,
But mine’s just right for me.
Yeah, mine’s just right for me.

There’s a girl I know who lives with her mom.
Her dad lives far away.
Although she sees her parents just one at a time,
They both love her every day.

Oh, a family is people and a family is love.
That’s a family.

Chart/Graph: Create a chart on the board to gather & display class sibling data.

Group Activity: Go around the circle and have each child share a (brief) list of who lives in their home. Ask about types and names of pets (if any).

Centers

Art

Button Families. Have children create their family using buttons. The buttons will be glued onto construction paper with printout of a house (optional – see example below). The students will then use crayons, markers or colored pencils to draw hair, arms and legs. Use a piece of thread to connect the center (heart) of each button to each other.

Kostenlose Vektorgrafik: Haus, Home, Symbol, Leere ...

If using Me and My Family Tree, you can still use the buttons to represent family members. Print out a basic tree for students to decorate. They can design each family member on the tree and you as the teacher can dictate who is who.

Science

Animal Family Observation

Take advantage of your local library by checking out (kid friendly) books on different animal families. Set up an observation area with the books (after you’ve discussed the importance of gentle book use) along with toy/plastic animals that correspond with what they are viewing in the reading materials. Mix in items from sensory materials (if you have them), like fake trees, grass, rocks for children to have the opportunity to design their own mock habitats. If you have or can find felt play mats (i.e. jungle, rainforest, desert), throw those out too.

Math

Family Count & Sort with corresponding colored bowls, laminated paper or trays

Dramatic Play

Baby Dolls

Sensory

Family Play Dough Mats (great for fine motor)

Washing Dishes

Fill a tub with soapy water and let the kids wash dishes from the Dramatic Play area. It’s fun for them and without their knowing, they are helping out with the cleanliness of the classroom materials!

My Family Sensory Bin

Decorate wooden peg dolls prior to lesson to look like different family member. You can add to it by cutting out and laminating family photos from online or magazines you have lying around the house. Fill a bin with rocks, beans, yarn…or material of your choice along with pegs people and then burry the laminated photos inside. Students can create matches based off of their own perception.

Blocks

Put out dollhouse figures and furniture with any kind of block. Students can build their own houses.
